Chichen Itza – The Mexican Wonder

The decadent Mayan Centers didn’t reach North Yucatan until 150 years later in which the Puuc style was developed like in the cities of Uxmal, Sayil, Kabah and Chichén Itzá; However, these towns fell around the year 1000AD with the exception of Chichen Itza which began an age of power in all its splendor and culminated in the first centralized state of Mayan history. The architecture of the Mayan era was as special as the Greek, Roman or Gothic. It has its local touches but fundamentally its surrounded by its unique nature.]

In Chichen Itza’s architecture you can appreciate the fusion of two Mayan styles:

The Puuc and the Toltec. On each of its buildings we can observe the finesse and delicately sculpted figures that represented all of the most important Mayan gods: Chaac and Kukulkan among others. The equinox its a unique archeoastronomical phenomenom which occurs when the earth is illuminated by the sun equally on the northern and southern hemisphere.

At dusk of the 21st of March and 22nd of September, when the spring and fall equinoxes occur, one can observe on the northern castle stairs of Chichen- itza, a serpent like solar projection, consisting of seven inverted light triangles resulting in shade that generates on the nine plataforms on this building when the sun sets. Just as it happened more than 1,000 years ago, the equinox phenomenon of the Kukulkan temple in Chichen-itza, still reaches to the hearts of all its spectators.

In these times of year, the game of light and shade on the temple, creates this optical illusion: that a serpent is moving. Thousands of curious people and admireres of the Mayan gods and thousands of tourists reunite at Chichen Itza to live this unique and unforgettable experience.

This phenomenon lasts two minutes while the sun sets and the triangles disappear downward or upward depending on which equinox it is. (The serpent appears to leave the temple downward in the Spring and upward into the temple in the Fall). At sunset, see a spectacular show of sounds and light.

GENRAL INFORMATION OF CHICHEN ITZA

Climate The weather conditions are characteristically hot and dry. The rainy season is in the summer and we recommend that you use hats (straw hats are best) to protect yourself from the sun. The temperatures fluctuate between 20ºC and 40ºC with a yearly average of 34ºC. The months between October and March make for the most comfortable days.

WHEN TO TRAVEL A great time to travel to this fabulous destination and to visit distinct archeological sites is during the Spring Equinox when the sun reflects the oscillating serpent leaving the Kukulkan Temple. You do not want to miss this phenomenon of a lifetime that only occurs one day of the year. Its advisable to make your reservations early and to arrive early to avoid the large crowds and to ensure your space up front.

MONEY The form of money used in Mexico is the Mexican Peso but in many places they accept the US Dollar. You can exchange money or travelers cheques in the airport, Money Exchange Houses (Casas de Cambio), hotels or local banks.

MEALS You can delight yourself with local Mayan dishes or the mestizos (dishes from combined cultures), both known for their high quality of presentation and delicious flavor. La Cochinita Pibil is one of the favorites which is pork in an achiote (red spice) sauce cooked in an earthen pit.

Also the Sopa de Lima (Lime Soup) that is prepared with turkey and shredded fried tortilla is very popular. Other well known plates include Chaya (Mayan spinach) Crepes, Queso Relleno (stuffed cheese) and Huevos Mutuleños (eggs prepared in the Mayan tradition), all are excellent.

HOW TO GET THERE

Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatan, has an international airport which receives flights from cities all over the world. Also there is a highway with many roads inside the Mayan area on which you can easily and safely travel that connect all the most interesting Mayan cities and sites.

Easily from Merida to Cancun you can go directly to Chichen Itza by car or if you prefer by bus, both ways are very cost efficient. You can opt to go by the highway from Merida to Puerto Juarez that arrives to Cancun.

During your trip you can appreciate many Mayan towns and various cenotes of the area as well as buy beautiful handcrafts and indigenous clothing. Leaving from Cancun, the highway passes through Valladolid, which too can offer you various attractions along the way. Visiting days: Monday to Sunday

Hours: 8:00 am to 5:00pm Trip length: 3 Hours Summertime suggestion: to use sunblock, hats and carry plenty of liquids Services: parking, turist flea market, museum, restaurant and bathrooms

Unique Fruits and Vegetables of Yucatan

While wandering around the markets of Yucatán, you’ll soon encounter some strange-looking fruits and vegetables. We’re home to a number of unique varieties of produce – while visiting, try them out!

Looking like something drawn by Dr. Seuss, the pitahaya is a bright pink cactus fruit. Eaten raw, it’s mildly sweet and low in calories. Like a kiwi, it’s full of tiny, indigestible seeds. It makes a great addition to a fruit salad, and can be juiced.

Nance is a small, tart, yellow cherry-like fruit with a strong flavor and penetrating scent. The fruits are eaten raw or cooked as dessert, and in colonial times were included in soup or in stuffing for meats. They are also made into a candy, Dulce de Nance, prepared with the fruit cooked in sugar and water.

Guaya, a relative of the lychee, has a thin but rigid layer of skin, traditionally cracked by the teeth. Inside the skin is the tart, tangy, cream pulp of the fruit, which is sucked by putting the whole fruit inside the mouth.

Saramuyo is another alien-looking fruit from Yucatán! It’s known elsewhere as sugar apple or sweetsop. This member of the anona family is found in local markets, especially in the Valladolid area of the Yucatán. It has the green, scaly skin typical of the anonas, with soft, sweet white pulp used in ices, ice cream and aguas.

The mamey sapote fruit is oval shaped, similar to a football, and is 3-8 inches in length. It has a relatively thick, woody, brown skin and its flesh has an orange/reddish tint. Although you can eat mamey sapote raw, you must first remove its skin and any pits inside. Raw mamey sapote is usually eaten with sugar, it’s also added to fruit salads, blended fruit drinks, and as an ice cream flavor. The taste is similar to sweet potato pie with a dash of almond.

Cebellina is an herb, somewhat of a cross between chives and spring onion greens.

Camote – white sweet potatoes – are used much like potatoes. They are usually boiled, then pureed with butter, salt, and pepper.

Chile Maxs (mash) – tiny red or green chiles that pack a powerful punch!

Elote pibil -or, pibilina – Maize, much tougher and less sweet than North American sweet corn, is soaked in salt water, then baked underground in a pit lined with hot rocks, a Mayan style of cooking known as pibil. The end result tastes like smoked corn.

Chaya, or Mayan spinach, is an important source of vitamins and protein. It must be cooked, as the raw leaves are toxic.

Sour orange – naranja agria – is used in many recipes, especially those using achiote paste. If not available, you can use a 50-50 blend of white vinegar and orange juice. They look like bumpy, green oranges.

Chayote is a member of the squash family, it’s pale green and avocado shaped. It can be used in any recipe calling for summer squash. The fruit does not need to be peeled and can be eaten raw in salads. It can also be boiled, stuffed, mashed, baked, fried, or pickled.

Guanábana – this fruit has a leathery green skin covered with soft spines. It’s a favorite ice cream flavor, and the juice is available everywhere.

Tuna – sweet prickly pear – this is the fruit of the nopal cactus. It’s eaten raw, made into fruit drinks, or cooked into a jam. Be careful – the intense purple-red juice stains everything!

Be adventurous! Visit the local markets and try some local produce!

Two New Museums About the Maya Are Now Open in Yucatan, Mexico

The first new major museum open is the Gran Museo Del Mundo Maya (Grand Museum of Merida Maya World), located in Merida, originally opened in September 2012, closed for a while and is now open again. The expansive museum has a collection of more than 500 pieces, including textiles, religious objects, and items reflecting the current lives of the Mayas. They have engravings, books, and historical documents, artistic and religious works from the colonial historic era in addition to artifacts from the pre-Hispanic era including stelas, stone sculptures, ceramics and offerings. The exhibit rooms move from the present into the past through four distinct sections: The Mayab, Nature and Culture; Mayas of Today; Mayas of Yesterday; and Ancestral Mayas. The unique museum has many interactive exhibits and even has a laser light and sound show in the evenings. It also has a large screen projection room for various presentations.

The new Merida museum is open from 8:00am to 5pm, except on Tuesdays. The entrance fee is about $150 pesos. The museum houses a nice restaurant. Complete with a bar, the restaurant offers of regional and international cuisine, including desserts. Please note that Merida’s first Museum of Anthropology located in El Palacio Cantón is still open. The grand colonial building alone is worth the visit.

Cancun’s recently opened (November 2012) Museo Maya de Cancun includes 350 archeological artifacts including some that have never been displayed and some discovered in recent excavations. Some artifacts were previously exhibited at the Museo Regional de Yucatan or «Canton Palace» in Merida and the former Archeological Museum in Cancun. The massive 55,000 square feet structure contains three 4,400-square-foot exhibition halls, two for permanent exhibits and one temporary exhibitions. A visit to the museum also includes access to the archaeological site of San Miguelito.

Located in Cancun’s beach hotel zone, the museum is open from 8:00am to 5pm, except on Mondays. The entrance fee is about 60 pesos.

Access to the museums by taxi is easy, or their are educational travel companies like, Explorations Inc., who offer cultural tours in Yucatan. Such tours allows an opportunity to visit both these major new museums. Explorations’ tours in the northern part of the Yucatan Peninsula highlight the past and living history of the Maya with visits to Mérida, Valladolid, Campeche, Izamal, Ek Balam, Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Sayil, Akumal, Mayan villages, markets, colonial haciendas, cenotes, three coasts and more. Both the cultural and natural history are explored along with regional cuisines of Yucatan.

In the Northern Yucatan of Mexico, travelers can also experience many of the small wonders to be found there – at small archaeology sites, traditional Mayan towns and villages, beautiful nature areas, local restaurants and markets, and with interactions with local residents.

Tulum Real Estate – At the Center of New Investment Opportunities

Tulum Real Estate is poised to become one of the fastest growing markets in Latin America, and for buyers this means that their couldn’t be a better time to invest. For those who wish to make Tulum their new home, it means that they will be able to enjoy all the services which already exist, plus the many more which will arrive in the future at the lower prices still available. For those who wish to invest, it means that properties are likely see significant return on their current purchases.

Tulum’s movement towards becoming one of the fastest growing markets recently took a step forward with the official call for bidding on the building and operating of the Riviera Maya International Airport, which will be located only a few miles away. The airport will require an investment of about $300 million US. The call for bidding is open to national and foreign investors, and is for the construction, management and operation of the international airport for 50 years.

Together with the rest of the Riviera Maya, stretching from Cancun to Tulum, and including Playa del Carmen, the area now welcomes the highest number of visitors in Mexico, and has been an ever-growing favorite for international real estate buyers as well.

The real estate area most directly benefited by the airport will be, of course, Tulum, which will gain a growing amount of international interest in property purchases. Other areas which will benefit include Playa del Carmen, which will be directly between the area’s two international airports (less than an hour away from each) and Costa Maya in the south of the state, which will gain growing amounts of tourism traffic with the presence of a high-traffic international airport nearby.

Another area which may see benefits is the nearest part of the inland section of Yucatan Real Estate, where the colonial city of Valladolid will enjoy closer access to an international airport, and a high-profile tourism destination. Yucatan MLS listings for the area may also begin to capture interest, especially with a new highway planned to connect the city to Playa del Carmen as well.

At the center of all of this, Tulum will soon grow into one of Mexico’s leading tourism and real estate destinations. Buyers looking for a beachfront home in an up-and-coming community, as well as investors will do well to consider Tulum.
